loki's Story

It is with deepfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Loki, our eight-year-old American bluenose pitbull terrier.  Loki was blessed with a big heart and the sweetest demeanor, and after a rough start to life, always looked forward to educating people on the benevolent nature of pitbulls and advocating responsible ownership. When he came to Prince George from Calgary, he had no basic training or manners, but quickly proved that he loved to learn almost as much as he loved to snuggle. He quickly took to obedience work, but his true love was agility, where he could flex his athleticism.  Loki loved the work he did with the Paws for Connection program and with youth custody, but was never afraid to take a well-earned nap.  He touched many lives.

On the afternoon of March 9th, 2014, Loki passed away after defending Chara and Grimmace from a mother bear who had made her den not 100 feet from residential housing.  Incredibly, after being pulled into the den, he survived inside until the bear could be brought out.  His wounds were fatal, but he passed in solace and comfort.  The three young bear cubs were unharmed.

The tragedy of the dog is that they spend just over a decade providing friendship, laughter, and unconditional love, only to depart after too little time.  To have man's best friend for anything less is nothing short of devastating. Loki was a paragon of his breed, full of love and valor, and we will always remember, love, and honour him.
In honour of Loki and his last act, Pawsitive Horizons has established Loki's Fund.  Loki's Fund is a fundraising effort to help subsidize the cost of veterinary treatment for dogs injured in course of protective acts.  When Loki suffered his fatal injuries, Pawsitive Horizons knew that our dog insurance would cover any of the associated veterinary costs, allowing him to get the best care available.  Veterinary care is expensive, and while Pawsitive Horizons strongly encourages the purchase of dog insurance to avoid large costs associated with care, we do not wish for dog owners to have to make hard decisions based on financial implications. Preferential distribution of funds will go to pit bulls and other bull breeds/mixes; however, we do not discriminate, therefore, any breed is eligible.

*Please note that Pawsitive Horizons does not issue tax receipts for financial giving. We will, however, be glad to discuss how to best acknowledge/recognize your gift. Contact us to begin the conversation.
